Help Wanted! Play a game and get me a degree!

Sareth's picture

Greetings! I need assistance from as many gamer types as are willing to help me out.

I am in my final semester of University, and as part of that I need to put together a research project, execute it, then write a thesis showing my process and results. I've pretty much got it all set up and ready, but I need one last thing!

You.

I am trying to get as many people as possible to agree to commit to playing a simple game on LiveJournal. It's a freeform RPG style game, with the simple premise that you are a student at a magical school, posting as your character! The more people who participate, the better my results will be! All I'm asking for is one month (Feb 15 to March 15) after which there will be a survey. Take the survey, and then you can go about your merry way, knowing you have helped a poor, starving University student get that piece of paper he so needs to feed his starving wife and children! What's not to like about that?

Oh, and as a reward, if you decide you like the game you can keep playing it after the 15th. I'll keep the lights on as long as there is interest!

Thanks!

I think I can probably manage this. If I do, it'll likely delay the game I intend to run here, but that's OK. It'll give me a little more prep time. It's can't promise I'll make it all the way through, but I'll give it a shot.

Anyone else going to try it?

I'm willing to give it a shot.  But I've never done any kind of RPG so I'm pretty clueless.  I've enlisted my hubby's help so we'll see how it goes.

Why not! I'll be your absolute "RPG for dummies" test case!  Wink

OK...I've set up a new LJ account, and the New Student Page tells me: "Next, please go to [info]polymagic_u and post an introduction!  (To post to a community, select the link labeled "Post to this community" on the top bar of the screen, beneath the community name.)"

I see nothing at the top that is a link "Post to this community". I'm a very literal, precise language junkie...a little like programming a computer, so I will try my best to do exactly what you tell me to do, but if I don't see what you tell me I should see, we have a problem! Smile

Care to comment? I'm using Firefox, and if IE is required, I withdraw my offer to participate. Smile

Re: Help Wanted! Play a game and get me a degree!

So, I used the link in your post above and got to the "Post an Entry" page, where the header tells me that I'm posting to squirrelgm. Your instructions are to include name, age, gender, LJ, major and clubs. Is this supposed to be my real-world info?

Then, the bio for my character...am I correct in assuming this is for the character I'm playing in this game?

Don't laugh...poor Kheldar has to suffer through this every time he intoduces me to a new game...and when we did an rpbem a few years ago, it was worse!

Are you really really sure you want to welcome complete newbies to this thing?  Smile

Sorry Kheldar if I'm embarassing you. Shy

Re: Help Wanted! Play a game and get me a degree!

It's all for your character, none of it's for you.

Don't worry about being new at it!  We all have been at one point or another.  It's all good!

As for the problem with posting to the community in the first place, I think that's my fault.  I kind of failed to mention that you should join the community first so that you can post to it.

Sick

I'll fix that.

Ah good. I was going to post the same question about posting.

And yes, I don't think most roleplayers see themselves as part of an elite club. It's just telling stories, and new people are always welcome.

Ok, I'm in as Buck Lampton.

Dad, I'm kind of surprised that you are interested. It's kind of a high-school/college aged Harry Potter thing. I didn't think that was really your thing...

Ah!

I was wondering who that might be.  Heh.  Welcome!

Also, one slight update.  Rather than the original link I provided, http://community.livejournal.com/polymagic_u/323.html will take you straight to a post that orrients new players.  The original link takes you to the whole game.  It'd be easy to get lost looking for relevent info there.

Re: Help Wanted! Play a game and get me a degree!

Actually, you're right. I was motivated by wanting to help, but once I learned that it would be a spoof on Harry Potter, I was intrigued - sounded fun. But, in retrospect, I don't think I'll be able to handle it - especially given the targeted age/circumstances. I'm not sure I can role play somebody 40-50 years younger than I am. Perhaps Karen will join...she's a lot younger spirited than I am!  Smile

I'm sure it would be a learning experience for me, but I'm not sure how hard I'd be willing to work at it, and don't need to burden folks with having to lead me by the hand every step of the way.

Bottom line...I think that maybe I'd better skip it. All that's really done so far is to set up a new LJ account, so I guess no damage done, and nothing to undo.

Thanks anyhow for the invitation.

Re: Help Wanted! Play a game and get me a degree!

I am so sorry but I'm afraid I'm going to have to back out also.  My husband is having to do a bunch of overtime, which means I am doing overtime on the home front.  So I'm busy and exhausted.  I am having a heck of a time, under the circumstances, figuring out how to use LJ and I still have to learn how to RP.  So I don't think I can manage it right now.  If Kheldar starts up a game here I may give that a shot since there will be a lot less learning to do.  Thanks for letting us know and good luck with both the game and your project!

Re: Help Wanted! Play a game and get me a degree!

Sareth, I hate to do this, but I'm going to bow out. If I don't feel comfortable viewing the posts from the game at work, then I really don't feel comfortable playing the game at all. I do wish you the best of luck with the project, and I'll be really interested to know how it all goes and what the results are, but I just can't participate.
