Making characters

Monday night our roleplaying group finally got together to start working on characters for our upcoming GURPS Firefly game. Everyone has had tricky schedules lately, or there's been bad weather, or something has just come up for like the past month since we played Og, so it was good to finally get moving again.

We spent a good chunk of the evening just talking about what kind of character everyone was going to play without even pulling out character sheets and thinking about attributes and skills and such. This was really useful, because everyone was able to get help with fleshing out their characters and adding interesting details.

I don't have a lot of time tonight to go over everyone's characters, so expect a dump on that next week. For now I'll just say that we've got a very interesting group of characters put together, and it should be a lot of fun to play.

We did have one adjustment. One of the guys dropped out because of scheduling problems. He was going to be the captain of the group's spaceship. So, instead this role will be taken over by our 16 year old friend! This should be pretty interesting for her to be the group leader when the rest of the players are all much older than her. Should be fun.

Anyway, more details some other time.

Re: Making characters

Ok. Yes, yes, GURPS Firefly is a cool idea. Big smile It was actually a group consensus. Everyone in the group is actually a fan of the show/movie. In fact the main reason everyone is a fan is because I bought the show and brought it in to work where we watched 2 episodes a week during lunch. That hooked lots of people, and we watched it all the way through twice more at work about every 12-18 months after the first showing.

I initially brought up the idea because I own the actual Firefly RPG book (which looks like a decent rules-lite type of system), and I was listing off some different possibilities for our next game. But, we decided to run it in GURPS instead of the new system mostly because I'm more familiar with GURPS.

Just wait until I start telling you guys about the characters. It's going to be a very interesting group!

Re: Making characters

Since I was busy helping our teenage friend flesh out her character last night, Kheldar and I discussed my character on the way to his doctor's appointment today. I promised I'd let him share the details about the appointment, but I call dibs on telling ya'll about my character (or what I've decided up to this point.)

I will be playing the engineer of the group named Mia Lancaster-Smith. Originally, I was going to base her on the engineer from the shows (and my favorite character) named Kaylee. But actually she is shaping up to be quite different from Kaylee. She is 27, and unlike Kaylee, is very well-schooled. Not that she doesn't have a natural talent for the workings of a ship, but she is definitely more book-learned than Kaylee. She grew up on a pristine Core Planet in a moderately wealthy family, and was forced into an arranged marriage at the age of 17. She grew to love her husband, and they eventually had a child when she was 23. Her husband, however, did not share the same feelings she did, and the pressures of fatherhood drove him to run off with another woman (possibly Saffron, for those of you who have watched the show Laughing out loud ). Mia hasn't seen him for a year. She and her good buddy from school, who is another player in our group, petitioned Mia's Uncle by marriage to give them a ship so they could travel out to the Rim in search of answers for the other character's brother, and the possibility of finding her husband (although I don't think she's out to salvage the relationship at this point). Mia refused to leave without her son, Jayden, so her in-laws sent along a nanny/cook named Pierre (from a previous campaign we ran) to help care for Jayden.

I'm pretty excited to be playing this character! Now that I have some background info in my head, I'll be able to flesh her out on paper with Kheldar's help. Speaking as a player in the group, we are all pretty excited about this campaign! Big smile
