Yes, I'm aware of the problem, and I've got no idea at this point why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. There's no pattern I've been able to determine (other than the fact that it's never actually happened to me). Some day I'll get around to trying to figure it out.
Of course it doesn't happen to you! Kent, for what its worth, I have AWFUL problems with the smilies! Sometimes it seems random. Sometimes it seems like it has to do with the spaces or other punctuation around the smilies. Last time I had a problem, it seemed like if I had two exclamations and before the smily it didn't work but only one was okay!!:) !:) (so much for that theory) It seems like no spaces between the last character and the smily works better than spaces. But who knows. I'll let you know if I figure out a pattern.
I finally discovered why smileys don't work sometimes. Any time you have multiple spaces in a row, the editor turns all but the last of those spaces into which is html for a non-breaking space. If this isn't done, then the browser will strip out the extra spaces and only show a single space. The problem occus when this happens immediately after the smiley. The & symbol is interpreted as being part of the smiley, and it gets all confused. This is easy to have happen, since when you click the smiley to insert, it adds a space for you.
So, make sure you only have a single space after your smiley, and if you do end up with multiple spaces, delete all of them and then re-add a single space after the smiley. This should clear up the problem.
This explains why I never saw the problem, as I'm anal about not putting multiple spaces in a row.
I'll also investigate if I can work around the problem, but for now, pay attention to spaces and your smileys should work.
Re: smilies
Seems that some work and some dont.
and it may depend on placement in the comment.

Re: smilies
Wow!
I'm impressed...even though that's the kind of thing you do most of your day, most days...still impressed!
