I've always had City of Heroes on my list of games to go back to someday. Today gauntman (a co-worker) mentioned that he resubscribed to City of Heroes, and was remembering how much fun that game is. He made it sound pretty tempting, but I'm not planning on going back to the game yet for two reasons. First of all, I'm planning on waiting at least until their next free expansion, which will introduce player-created missions. Secondly, I know if I resubbed, then Optiker would be interested too, but I suspect this would leave Hameed/Adviga out of our Saturday evening play sessions, as the lag issue would probably make things playable (unlike Guild Wars, which is at least tolerable for them).
Of course, perhaps if he hasn't already done so, Hameed should go try out the 14-day free trial to see how well it plays... Still, even if that weren't a problem (and I suspect it would be a problem), I'd like to wait at least until the next expansion.
Still, this led to gauntman and I talking about EVE Online, which is another game I've been thinking seriously about resubscribing to. I realized recently that EVE is similar in some ways to the free web game The West which a couple of us have been playing lately. I suspect that it's only a matter of time before I decide that I'm done with The West. I've already played it a lot longer than I usually play web games.
Anyway, the reason EVE came up, is that it's also a game that is extremely lag tolerent, even more so than Guild Wars is. This means it might be something that Hameed could play. Of course, it's also a game that's very different than other MMOs, which means that getting together to play on Saturday evenings might look a little different. Still, it's a possibility that perhaps should get explored. There are a couple other nice features too, such as the ability to purchase playing time (normally priced at the typical $15 per month) using in-game money (although I don't yet know how much effort such a thing would take, I have seen plenty of things to indicate that this mechanism could at least be used to reduce the cost of playing even if not totally eliminate the cost). Also there is the interesting fact that as with The West, your character can gain experience even when you are not playing. Your character does not earn experience points or level, but instead is constantly studying for a skill of your choice, even while offline.
There are a number of other interesting things about the game. Perhaps I should make that a blog post... Anyway, it's certainly something to check out. It wouldn't surprise me if I resubscribe sometime soon. Others can try out the free 14-day trial. Optiker, I'd suggest that you hold off until you guys come visit. Then if you are interested I can show you in person and walk through the basics.
Oh yeah, one other thing about EVE... Don't be put off by things you might see about unlimited PVP and such. There is plenty of things to do in that game without getting wrapped up in fighting other players. You can spend your entire life in relatively safe portions of space, and still do interesting things like production, trading, research, missions, mining, courier runs, etc. I played for 6 or 10 weeks way back when (don't recall exactly how long, perhaps it was more), and I never got killed by another player (although with less luck it could have happened when the corporation I was playing with went out hunting some people who were enemies of our alliance).
Anyway, just some thoughts about MMOs. Some of this has been sparked by our recent Guild Wars difficulties, and me wondering if we're going to hit a point where we just aren't good enough to continue... I don't know, maybe tweaking skill selections will help...
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Oh, and you know what? If you want to try out EVE, let me know first. Because if (when) I resubscribe, I can give you a free 21 trial instead of the 14 day one. In addition, if you end up subscribing, I'll get a free month.
So please, please, ask me if you want to try it out!
Re: Contemplating MMOs
I have to admit that The West is getting stale. While I had the free automation for 3 days, it moved along. Right now, it's almost a chore to keep it going, and I seem to be stuck between quests since I don't have the labor points to do what are still outstanding, and am a level or two from having enough. I could spend a lot of time guarding the fort before getting a flag at 3% prob, and my only other one is "gemstone", which I don't have the labor points for. I just found I also have to get a glass of water, but that's almost trivial, and not sure what it might open up. I'm sure there's a better way, but I don't know it and am not excited enough about it to work at it. Right now, just sort of marking time.
Relative to GW, I understand what you are saying - it's not that exciting to go out every week and fail - especially since playing a monk wouldn't be my first choice, and it's something we need, and I made that decision a long time ago and have to stick to it. So. like you, I was expecting we'd get to a bottle neck and give it up.
I thought about EVE - a long time ago - but never even tried the demo. I'd have to see what it's like, and also see what Karen thinks, before paying $15/mo for each of us to play it. If I wanted to spend that, I'd sure go back to CoH - though I understand the limitation Silvertoes have. That means I'd probably go back to it alone, or with Karen for our own recreation, not for family play. It's sure a hard standard to match as far as I'm concerned.
Relative to CoH, I've sure been wanting to get back to it. I think I'd do it, except that I'm afraid that I'd spend more time at it than I want to. I can get wrapped up in it pretty quick and lose track of time - or at least, jump into it to do a mission or two and back out, but that too many times in a day.
So, guess I'll sit tight adn see what EVE is like when we visit Kheldars. In the meantime, the weather is getting better and so I'll be getting busier with more golf, but also lots of outdoor work around the place - will need to hit the ground running when we get back from Texas/Utah, then beak for Easter company and then run some more!
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Actually, the hero healers do just fine on the job of healing, so you really shouldn't feel stuck with that job. Feel free to pick something else you'd enjoy more.
EVE really is a different kind of MMO. We'll see what you guys think.
Definitely looking forward to your visit!
Re: Contemplating MMOs
I actually tried COH when they had their last free weekend. Adviga and I got online for a little while I think and I played it as much as I could that weekend. It was tolerable for the free weekend but a lot like GW in the lag issues not worth paying a monthly for at this point. Also I have problems getting connected to the update servers for some reason, I spent half the afternoon on that Sunday just trying to connect. I thought it may have been because they were extra busy due to the free weekend but have tried several time since and been unsuccessful here but connect the first try at church or the local Arbys where they have no lag. I plan on trying to get in again on the next free trial weekend. Maybe Adviga will allow me to take my laptop to town for a better connection at that point but other than that, I think I'm out of COH until some better/cheaper broadband comes along.
Please don't wait on us if/when you decide to resub to COH. I've been encouraging Adviga to relax and sew for the last few weeks and will probably continue to encourage that in the future anyway and that just leaves me out which is ok, I've been getting back into playing my Paragon lately anyway.
As for EVE, I'll have to think about. I don't know that we have the budget for that as we are paying a premium for our broadband in the first place. I may change my mind and if I do I'll let you know.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Well, I'll likely be resubbing to EVE (I'm downloading the client right now in fact). I suspect that without Hameed on board, Optiker will probably pass too, since he and I have Titan Quest to play when it's just the two of us. But, who knows. I'll let him check it out this weekend.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Switching characters would create some problems in that I don't know if my others have all the quests that we've played together that the monk has, though they are all lvl 20, and I think more advanced than he is. However, Mom and I (with my ranger) did one after you signed off on Saturday, and when we went to do another, I wasn't allowed, so probably need some catch-up. I'd have to check.
The other problem is that I only have two characters on each of our accounts - the monk and a ranger who is my second least favorite character, though I'd rather play him than the monk. On the other account I have another ranger from Prophecies that's my second favorite, and an elementalist that's my favorite. However, They are on the same account that Mom plays. Her one character on the second account is only at level 14, and is a dervish that I don't think she cares much for. So, we're kinda stuck on that. I may consider playing my ranger next time we play and see if that helps.
The other thing I could try on the current quest that we keep failing is to let hero healers do the healing and set my monk up as a damage dealer. His secondary is elementalist, and the only attack skill I have set up is stone daggers, which does decent damage. I could set up his skills to do damage instead of heal - maybe just one heal skill for myself, to help keep me alive. I might set that up and try one of the side quests with Mom that she and I have and see how it goes.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Another thing I thought of today is that maybe we could use a change of scenery. I don't know who has it or not but I'd be willing to purchase the Eye of the North for Adviga's account (Amazon has for ~$18) if you all wanted to get that for the accounts that don't have it yet and we could go there to play for a while. I can budget a one time $18 expense easier than a monthly $15 expense especially with the connection problems we have here.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
I bought a VHS copy of Summer of the Monkies at the Goodwill lasst week, and Mom and I were in the middle of it when Kathleen called, so I took a break to come in and kill time at the computer.
I was browsing the EVE Online FAQ and found this: "EVE is designed to run on a 56Kbps modem. Naturally, better connections can enhance game performance, but dial-up users are still able to play and enjoy EVE. Stability is more important than raw bandwidth." [my emphasis] In addition to the other concerns Hameed had, this might also be a problem. Of course, the proof is in trying it.
Also, I haven't looked real hard yet, but it looks like there is a cost to purchase the game itself to start with, then the subscription. I thought it was a free download, but guess I should have known better. Maybe it was when I looked at it last, but not now.
It sounds ineresting. I'll be anxious to check it out at Kheldar's house this weekend. I'm always intrigued by online games that have minimal requirements - how do they do that? There's got to be some kind of quality/bandwidth/CPU/video/etc. tradeoffs. Either that or some great innovative new way of doing things.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
We have EotN on both accounts so could go with that. We've played it with some of our characters, but I for one don't mind repeating quests for others to catch up. I have enjoyed the new scenery and different environment. There are some new things to learn - little different approach to the "wandering priests" at the rebirth shrines, for example. I'm not big on African themes, and it was a nice change for me. Mom and I have gotten to a point of it being too hard in two of the three parallel primaries, so you do get to that point there as well, but it takes a while. I don't doubt that with some more experienced players on the team instead of mostly computer players, we might do a lot better.
It takes a bit, but then you get to the point where there are three parallel primaries. You can do all three, so that triples the amount of play before getting to a brick wall.
I guess it's Kheldar's call on whether to go that route, and Hameed's on whether or not he wants to put the money into it. I can go either way, but will say again, I found it more enjoyable than Nightfall or Prophecies.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Of course, since Adviga hasn't been playing lately, you wouldn't even need to pick it up until she's ready to play... I can certainly pick it up for MrsKheldar. I suspect she won't mind. Amazon has it for $16.25 plus shipping, or $18 with no shipping (if you can spend another $7 in that order in order to qualify for free shipping). Or I'm sure there are other places online you could order. Either way, it's definitely better than the $30 you'll be charged if you buy directly from the company.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
I'm sorry I haven't read all the other comments...but I wanted to toss out that Clanlord (originally built for Mac, now Mac and Windows) has been around since 1997 and as of January 2009 is subscription free. This means all you need is to purchase a one time account and yer good to go. There are no levels and no experience cap. It's actively maintained and developed for by a small group of volunteer GM's that all came from the playing community originally. More information can be found here http://www.deltatao.com/clanlord/index.html
As to the "massive" part of MMO, I wouldn't call it that...at any given time you can find between 10 and 70 people clanning

Re: Contemplating MMOs
Heh... you're still trying to get me into clanlords...
My main problem these days is time, not money, so despite it being free I'll still probably pass. Of course, Optiker might check it out, and if he gets hooked, who knows. I suspect it wouldn't work great on Hameed/Adviga's connection though.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
I believe it still supports dial-up...but clearly will be more challenging than "high" speed. (I'm still on DSL, thought they've ramped it up a bit in the last decade from 256 to 640)
Yup, double checked, they support 28.8kbs still

Re: Contemplating MMOs
Their problem is that they're using satellite, which has a really bad ping (despite good bandwidth), and can be somewhat prone to having the connection drop.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
I'm a very visual person. I've tried a few games with that kind of graphics format, and didn't find it very satisfying. I suspect that regardless of how "good" a game is, I'm hooked on 3D, so I think I'll pass on ClanLords.
Of course, Kheldar and Karen are going to get me to try Civ IV, which seems to me to be similar, so I could change my mind...but it would be a long shot, and Civ IV looked better to my eye than ClanLords.
I suppose that's a pretty shallow attitude, but since the time I'm willing to give to gaming is limited, I guess I can be as selctive as I want, for whatever reasons I want. By the time I add other criteria, including how much I enjoy a game, it makes it hard to find games. My gold standard at the moment is City of Heroes - not as realistic graphics as many, but the enjoyment of it compensates. Kheldar currently has me playing a 2-week trial of Eve Online. It's different in a lot of ways, but I'm not into a lot of strategy and planning. That may be Civ IV's Achilles Heel as well.
Picky, aren't I!
Thus, this thread!
Re: Contemplating MMOs
You do make it a challenge. I've wondered why you enjoy/enjoyed the golf games we've played so much, since in my mind it tends more towards strategy/planning than action...
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Oh yes...enjoyed them very much. They are the epitome of a good game to me. Skill in evaluating a situation, experience to make right choices, then hand-eye coordination - but not too much to be beyond my ability - and finally a little ranom chance and unknown effects like wind, ground contours, etc. that all combine to give a relatively consistent and predictable result that only fails miserably if I fail miserably. Same applies on the real world golf course!
I don't see that as very comparable to Eve where it appears that to really get into it, I need to have some occupation in mind so I know what skills to work towards, then follow the plan.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
I recognize this isn't important, as ClanLord has pretty much been shot down, but lately I've dipped back into it, and while I do get an occasional D/C in the neighborhood of once every few weeks (I can reconnect in 15 seconds) I'm otherwise having no issues playing it on my satellite connection.

Re: Contemplating MMOs
Well, there you go...
I didn't realize you guys were on satellite.
Re: Contemplating MMOs
Out as far as I am from civilization? It was that, or dial up.
