Kent, this one is for you in particular. It's essentially Car Wars. It's java, so it works on any OS. You manage your drivers online and enter regular scheduled events (at least one new one starts every 15 minutes).
You give new orders every second (turn-based), such as what speed to try and reach, and which direction to turn the wheel, who to target, who to fire, etc. Then once orders are submitted, that combat turn is carried out in real time.
The system is obviously heavily inspired by Car Wars, and it really works impressively well.
My gang is named Golden Anvil. Let me know if you join up, and let me know if you want help figuring it out. It's still in development, so documentation is a little spotty.

Oh yes, forgot to mention, it's internet only, but very modem friendly.

this is odd. the DL or MAC is a ZIp file. Not necessarily a concern. Unpacked though, there's no installer...
Also, it forces a Gang selection and when I put in golden Anvil, it wouldn't let me, so I gues I started my own called Iron Hammer.
Anyway... more to follow.

I believe that you should have a .jar file in that zip file (I think). So you just run that using java. Not sure how mac handles that, but there may be a thread on it in the forum.
Yes, I'm afraid that Golden Anvil is already taken.
Kent the crusher, eh?
One quick tip. Go to the "Towns" page (in the Gameplay menu), and select Dexter's Tavern. From there you can hire one other guy for free. If you're lucky, this might give you somebody with gunnery skill...
You can also go to the training facility to set what each of your characters is working on developing.
Note that most of the players in any given event are AIs not humans. Humans are marked in the events diary with a little icon that looks like the head and shoulders of a person. I've generally found people to be very friendly and helpful so far, but if you just feel like doing an event on your own, you can avoid them.
Look for events where the vehicles are provided for you, and you might start with a race or timetrial first so you can get the hang of how things work. Save the combat event for last, as it's a horribly crazy mess.
Let me know if you have any other questions, and let me know when you might be on. Perhaps we can hook up and do some races or something together.

well, I was chatting with a couple guys and they said puch this and puch that, and I was playing in a game... with a track-povided car, I believe.
It was a rather steep learning curve. Particularly since after the first turn I couldn't see my car. until 4 or 5 turns later when I was aided by benevolent drives in controlling the car camera. :?
after completing my first lap - after everyone passing me - I get stuck next to a barrier and couldn't back away, or push past so I had to retire.
However, it was quite entertaining. I'll do it again quite soon.

Yeah, my first race or two was really bad. Glad you were able to get some help.
I'm off to play an event or two.

okay... I checked ICQ, but didn't see you. Are you using any chat clients these days?? :?

I don't use ICQ anymore, since I lost my password, and nothing I did allowed me to get it back. I do run XFire, which not only tracks how much time I play different games, but also acts as a chat client (integrating into games much more easily than ICQ or others).

what about yahoo? that one's pretty clean and behaves itself.

meh...
I wouldn't even have XFire installed if it wasn't for the fact that it tracks my playing time...

Woo hoo! Did a race tonight at the Northern Desert Racing Circuit. There were actually 3 other humans in the race. We all left the AI's behind, but I came in 2nd, and that's after starting 7th out of 10 cars (with two humans at 1st and 2nd).
Anyway, the best part was that I actually took a track record for lap time in a car with a 1L engine. If you go to the page for that track, you'll see Ricardo Knight listed there.
Apparently you get about a $1000 bonus for taking the track record for you engine class! That puts me up to a profit of $3658 (after having spent $432 on repairs from a prior race).

Well, if I'd known you were going to be on tonight, I could have gotten online and raced with you... I'd have stunk up the course, but still.
Why no IM clients at all? I usually only open up mine when I'm looking for someone anyway, not like some teenage girl jumping eagerly at the "Incoming Message" tones.
Regardless, this is a busy weekend. Friday and Saturday night we're out doing stuff. Thursday night is the shuttle launch. A buddy wants to try to go see it. If it isn't scrubbed, it should be pretty sweet!

Cool! Someday I really really want to see a shuttle (or something else) launch...
I'm really just not into IM, that's all. The people I would communicate with online are the people on this forum (which serves as its own communication method), my family (who I stay in contact with via Ventrilo), and some people around here whom I see day to day or can just call on the phone.
It would have been neat to do a race together. Perhaps next week.
