Anybody else playing Portal? If so, I guess I need some help.
Can't figure out how to get past early stage - in room with two accessible lower floors with blocked (wire mesh) vertical wall to floor at my level where it looks like I need to go. If anybody can help, I can post a pic. I did shoot out the surveillance camera and was appropriately chastised!
Hopefully, if I can make a little progress to learn a little more than I know now, I can move ahead. Thanks!
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
I decided not to get it. Looks too much like a first person shooter type game from the video and I'm don't like those type games.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
It turns out that portal is first person, but absolutely no shooting involved. All you can do is create two portals which are linked to each other so you can pass through one and come out the other. It's really a puzzle game.
Dad, I haven't got it installed yet, but I'll install it overnight and see if I can give you a hint tomorrow without giving too much away. (Don't want to spoil the fun of solving it yourself...)
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Nothing spoiled. I have no qualms with cheats if it helps me get over the hump. As it is, I'm dead in the water, so I'd really appreciate any help.
BTW, AudioSurf is great! Funny thing though...when I play a song, and it shows me how others who played it scored, there's never anybody else that's played it! I must be the only person in the world playing the game!
Seriously, when I look at the titles others are playing, I don't recognize a single one. No wonder nobody's playing the soundtrack from Victory at Sea, The Blacksmith of Brandywine (New Christy Minstrels, ca 1963), Kawliga (Hank Williams), or some of the Christian songs I like. Even the ones Kheldar is playing are foreign to me - though I do recognize the artists! I keep thinking "What a great piece this is for this game...I've got to share it." forgetting that "To each his own."
Adviga would have a blast with this "game." But, Hameed would have to digitize some of her favorite music.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Hameed was kind enough to download the demo of AudioSurf for Adviga (after Optiker's earlier description of it) but has Adviga had time to play it? NO!! It sounds like a lot of fun!
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Well, today is the last day of the sale, so you'd better get cracking!
Dad, can you post a screenshot of the location you are stuck at so that I'll know when I see it?
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
You're playing at 7 am on a workday? You didn't need to do that just for me!
Here's the screen captures. Standing at the apex of two rooms forming an "L", with the portal I came in at my back, screen captures are looking right and looking left.
Thanks!
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Naw, I just fired it up for 10 minutes before I started doing my morning bible study.
I'll let you know when I reach that spot.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Shouldn't take you long. It's not long after you get the portal "gun" - not very far into the game at all.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Ok, the key point to realize is that you can enter either colored portal and you'll come out through the other portal. Every time you shoot the portal gun with the left mouse button it'll place the blue portal where you shoot, and the orange portal stays where it's at.
See if that helps.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Uh huh! That's going to help, huh? We'll see. It is a little confusing to see that gal through the portal doing what I'm doing, then realize that that's me...little change of gender though. I'll give it a try...maybe tomorrow sometime.
Thanks!

By golly...yumpin' yimminy! I guess that did help. In fact, that's the key to the whole game so far. I am now at level 6, I think. Fun game...it will be interesting to see what the next stonewall is!
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Yeah, I figured it was just a simple concept misunderstanding.
I just played through to the second to last level, and I'll have to think about the situation for a while. It's a tough one.
It is a fairly short game, but after you beat the levels, you play through them again in advanced challenge mode (not sure yet what that does). In addition, there are apparently a number of user-created levels you can download. I haven't figured out details on that yet.
All in all, a very interesting game. It does a good job of making you feel clever when you figure out how to progress.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Wow...done that soon! Shouldn't take me more than another year or two!
I guess I never thought of it in terms of FINISHNIG! I'm not sure I ever finished a game...I guess Mom and I finished Day of the Tentacle. Usually they get way too hard for me long before I "finish". I thought I ha a chance on CoH since I got to lvl 38 with my first character...the one named Optiker - what else would it be!
But you were at lvl 44 and working pretty hard and long to make 45, so tha put me in my place!
So, from the signs on the walls that track progress, there seems to be 16 levels, or is that just the first stage? How many levels are there?
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
I'm not entirely sure how many levels there are. Guess we'll find out.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
I was just wondering if you would make an infinite loop, where you have a pair of portals arranged vertically so you would be falling forever - bottom transporting to the top.
I wonder what an in-game terminal velocity would be - or if your velocity would be reset each time you exited a portal.

Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
You absolutely can. In fact, there are certain placecs in the advanced mode where doing such is required in order to pick up enough momentum to shoot you over an obstacle.
Momentum is perfectly conserved when you pass through a portal.
Re: Portal - anybody else have it and playing?
Ahh... fascinating. :)
